The Details: A Listening Initiative + Vigil
This is the type of IDOPP event to have if...
- Your previous experience with IDOPP has given you an idea of what might be possible, and you want to go further.
- Your congregation is already significantly involved in peace and social justice ministry in your community.
- Your congregation is ready for an exciting, challenging way of engaging your community, regardless of your previous experience with IDOPP or community ministry.
What is a "Listening" Initiative?
A "Listening" Initiative involves least 2-3 months of planning, relationship building, vision casting, and information gathering with 3-6 local faith groups and organizations, culminating in a public prayer vigil focused on the actual violence/peace & justice concerns of your community. The vigil may be the catalyst for a continued effort to address these local concerns following September 21.
Some things to think about...
- The essence of this type of IDOPP event is to bring different faith-based groups and community organizations together to work collaboratively for the community. One church should not be seen as the sole decision-making group.
- The more time you have to organize this event, the better the outcome will be.
- Consider using a very public venue for your vigil--a public park or auditorium--a place where everyone will feel welcome.
- Consider erecting a peace pole as a gift to your community, either purchased or made locally, as a key component of your observance.
- Consider using the Kids as Peacemakers mural project as a way of involving children and youth.
